Complimentary lab supplies to referring physicians
Rabkin Dermatopathology provides complimentary lab supplies to referring physicians in Pittsburgh and Western PA. These supplies include three types of specimen containers based on specimen size—no refrigeration required. Specimens should be placed in the appropriate formalin container immediately after removal. For direct immunofluorescence studies, use IF medium (Michel’s medium) containers only. Specimens for direct immunofluorescence should never contact formalin.
Specimen submission procedure:
1. Complete a label for each specimen and affix it to the container.
2. Use ballpoint pens to fill out labels and request slips, as marker ink can run if leakage occurs. Waterproof pens are available upon request.
3. Complete one requisition slip (3-part carbonless paper) per patient and retain the pink copy for your records.
4. Place each patient’s specimen in a biohazard bag. Fold the request slip and any additional paperwork and place it in the pocket behind the bag.
5. Consolidate all biohazard bags with their respective request slips into a large transport bag or FedEx clinical pak. Squeeze out excess air and seal the bag.
