Patient Billing FAQ
Why am I receiving a bill from Rabkin Dermatopathology Laboratory, P.C.?
If you receive a billing statement from our lab, it is because your physician sent one or more of your skin samples to our specialized dermatopathology laboratory for microscopic interpretation. Our billing statement is in addition to whatever you may have paid to your physician for the office visit and/or the biopsy. We are completely independent from any physician’s office or hospital, and our billing is completely separate.
It is possible that there may be a balance due even after your insurer processes our claim as many insurance providers have deductibles, copayments, pre-existing condition exclusions, limits on annual benefits and other policy clauses that may result in nonpayment or limited payment by the insurer. Because of these insurance policy provisions, the fact that you have insurance does not necessarily mean your medical bills will be paid in full by your insurer even when the provider is in-network.
The insurance information we have on file for you is only as accurate as what we are given by your own physician’s office. If we do not appear to have correct insurance information on file for you, please contact our Billing Department and we will be happy to submit a claim with the corrected and updated information. You should then also notify update the information with your physician’s office.

How are your fees determined?
As required and monitored by federal regulations, our lab fees are based upon the number of biopsies taken and the specific testing performed on each biopsy as we only have one fee schedule for all patients, insured or uninsured. We may be able to make some adjustments for demonstrated grave indigent or financial hardship situations on a case by case basis and upon completion of our Financial Hardship Form. We also store the glass slides containing your skin samples should they be needed at any later date for reference or re-examination.
Can I pay by credit or debit card?
We accept checks, money orders or credit/debit cards for any balances due as directed on your statement. Credit/debit card payments can also be made directly through our web site at www.rabkindermpath.com. Please contact one of our billing specialists at (412) 786-3054 or (412) 968-9266 with any additional billing questions you may have. Checks and money orders should be made payable to Rabkin Dermatopathology and mailed to our lab at: Rabkin Dermatopathology Lab, 440 William Pitt Way, Pittsburgh, PA 15238
What if I have questions related to my pathology report?
While we are happy to send you a copy of your report, the physician who took your biopsy is in the best position to answer questions about your report. Your pathology report should be combined with your doctor’s clinical expertise and his or her clinical observations of your skin and your overall health history before reaching any conclusions about your condition, treatment or prognosis. If your physician has any questions about our report, he or she is welcome to call our Dermatopathologists, however, you and your physician should discuss your lab report in addressing any questions you may have about the results of your biopsy.
What Should I Do if I have Insurance but don’t want to bill my insurance?
While most patients prefer that we bill their insurance, every patient has the right to pay us on their own instead of submitting a claim to your insurance provider for any or all of our services. If you would like any of our charges not submitted to your insurance provider, you or your physician will need notify our lab in writing prior to the biopsy is taken. If you choose not to have your insurance billed, you will be responsible for our charges.
What if I have other questions related to billing?
You may call, write, or fax us, whichever is more convenient for you. Our Billing Department is available 8AM to 6PM Eastern Time Monday through Friday except national holidays.
